Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups (440g) all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups (360ml) warm water (~110°F)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • For Topping: 2 tbsp melted butter + flaky sea salt (optional)

Instructions

1. Activate the Yeast

  • In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

2. Make the Dough

  • In a large bowl, whisk flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  • Stir with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.

3. Knead & Rise

  • Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let rise for 1–2 hours (or until doubled).

4. Shape & Second Rise

  • Punch down dough and shape into a round loaf. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes while preheating oven to 425°F (220°C).

5. Bake

  • Score the top with a sharp knife or razor.
  • Bake for 25–30 minutes until deep golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.

6. Butter & Serve

  • Brush hot loaf with melted butter (and sprinkle with sea salt if desired).
  • Cool slightly before slicing—best served warm!

Tips for Success

🌾 For extra crustiness: Place a pan of water in the oven while baking for steam.
🧈 Flavor boost: Add garlic powder or herbs to the butter topping.
🍯 Sweet variation: Swap butter for honey butter for a dessert-like twist.

This rustic bread is simple, satisfying, and smells heavenly—just like a bakery favorite! Pair it with soups, dips, or enjoy it plain with good butter.
