Ingredients
- 3 ½ cups (440g) all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 ½ cups (360ml) warm water (~110°F)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- For Topping: 2 tbsp melted butter + flaky sea salt (optional)
Instructions
1. Activate the Yeast
- In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
2. Make the Dough
- In a large bowl, whisk flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Stir with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
3. Knead & Rise
- Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let rise for 1–2 hours (or until doubled).
4. Shape & Second Rise
- Punch down dough and shape into a round loaf. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes while preheating oven to 425°F (220°C).
5. Bake
- Score the top with a sharp knife or razor.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes until deep golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
6. Butter & Serve
- Brush hot loaf with melted butter (and sprinkle with sea salt if desired).
- Cool slightly before slicing—best served warm!
